Pearls in Romania

In most Western and Northern European countries the cultural heritages are kept and taken care about with love, but there are countries as well which have more difficulties with their past. Romania is maybe one of them: old factory-buildings and houses are often completely abandoned or demolished, because they remind too much of the communist era. Romanian architect Corvin Cristian shows and proofs that it is possible to restore these buildings into useful and beautiful places.
These pictures are from the Mecanic Bar in capital town Bucharest/Bucuresti (2011), which gives - through its industrial style - homage to machines and factory workers.

To start this new year some fun images of the playful ´Air Heads´ balloons by Héctor Serrano Studio. Create your own party animals! Six animal balloon heads with paper sculpture features to fold and stick on. The paper flap system means no need for glue. Each animal consists of a balloon on a wand, plus pre-cut colour features which are attached with sticky pads. Also included are colour stickers for eyes and features.

Colourful Droog Design: the Superpatata lighting.  While playing, one controls the intensity of the light, so the light can be either direct or ambient. The Superpatata can be used as a lamp but also as a pillow, an anti-stress device and an object to warm your bed. Superpatatas can be easily stacked on top of each other.

Héctor Serrano received the Peugeot Design Award in 2000.

NAP-chair by Kasper Salto

Kasper Salto (Danish industrial designer) was born on 14 February 1967 in Copenhagen, Denmark, as the son of textile artist Naja Salto and grandson of leading Danish ceramist Axel Salto. He first trained as a cabinet maker before attending the Danish Design School, graduating in 1994. From 1994 to 98 he worked for designer Rud Thygesen. At that time he met Peter Staerk: their friendship would have a deep influence on his professional life. In 1997, he designed the Runner chair for Peter Staerk who made the chair famous in Denmark, but also abroad.

In 1998 Salto opened his own design design studio, wprking for companies such as Fritz Hansen, DubaB8, Engelbrechts and Lightyears. In 2003 he opened a new office, Salto & Sigsgaard, together with architect Sigsgaardan.

On the pictures: the NAP chair by Kasper Salto. The name of the chair reflects Kasper’s mentality. NAP stands for normal, active and passive. Normal means sitting up straight, all the way back into the seat. Active is when we are leaning forward to listen or speak, eat or work at a table. Passive means leaning back and relaxing. His aim was to make the NAP chair functional without compromising on appearance - just like the great designers of the past like Arne Jacobsen.
